How to prepare a garment photo for an AI fashion workflow

A useful clothing reference makes it easier to judge what an image-generation tool has changed. You do not need an expensive camera. You do need a photo that shows the garment clearly and gives the viewer enough information to understand its shape and details.

1. Make the garment the main subject

Photograph one item at a time when possible. Lay it flat or hang it neatly so the full outline is visible. Avoid letting sleeves, hems, straps or collars disappear behind other objects. If the item is worn by a model or mannequin, choose a position that shows its construction without hiding important areas.

2. Use soft, even light

Bright indirect daylight is a practical starting point. Place the garment near a window, but avoid direct sunlight that creates hard shadows or bright patches. If you use room lighting, try to avoid mixing very warm and very cool bulbs. Check that dark fabric still shows texture and that pale fabric is not washed out.

3. Choose a quiet background

A plain wall, neutral floor or uncluttered backdrop helps the garment stand out. Keep unrelated objects, busy patterns and strong background colours away from the edges of the item. The background does not need to be expensive; it needs to avoid competing with the clothing.

4. Show construction details

Make sure the neckline, waist, sleeves, straps, pockets, seams, fastenings, prints and hem are visible where relevant. For a garment with a distinctive back, embroidery or side detail, take an additional close-up. A single front-facing photograph cannot communicate every angle of a complex item.

5. Keep colour and texture honest

Do not add filters, heavy retouching or colour effects to the reference. Those edits can make it harder to compare the generated result with the real item. If colour is important, photograph in consistent light and compare the image on a screen with the garment in person. Phone displays can also shift colour, so do not treat the screen as a measurement instrument.

6. Check the image before uploading

What a good reference cannot guarantee

A clear photo improves the information available to a visual workflow, but it cannot force an AI model to reproduce every detail exactly. Generated images may alter patterns, proportions, seams, colour, texture or fit. Inspect results closely and do not use them as verified product photographs without checking them against the physical item.

Practical test: Before generating a full campaign, try one clear reference image and inspect the neckline, sleeves, waist, print and hem in the result. Note which details remain accurate and which need a different reference or a real photograph.
